Kindergarten Memories

Over this time as a student helper, I have time to get know the children. This experience has been a roller coaster of emotions. I have finally gotten in-sync and know exactly what to do in my time period at school. I find it hard to imagine no longer being at the school and helping and seeing the girls and boys grow.

Classroom Management

My class has a standard management plan. I think this is important because often in kindergarten students are learning the boundaries of what is alright and what is not. The rule is that if you are disrespectful, rude, or acting out you must move your name down the paper. This is very effective for the children and they have the fear of their parents getting the call. Another management is separating the children that are more talkative is around other people. This could be a problem because it isolates them but the class does enough thinks that it makes it alright. Finally, since many of the problems for these children is dealing with cutting in lines and always being first. The teacher ensures that cutting is not tolerated and if you do you sit down and have to walk back. Also, there is a specific person that gets to walk in the front of the line to ensure that every child gets a chance.

Teaching Strategies

I feel that my favorite technique that I have seen my teacher do would be having small groups. Right now she is able to have two groups and another teacher to help with the trouble students or the students that are struggling with. This works well so that everyone is getting the attention they need. The only problem with this is that the students become segregated on their learning ability. This technique is hard to do because you need to have the right budget. I would want to try to do this in my class.

Teacher's Perspective

The teacher that I am assisting with has a student view. I did not ask her but the reason that I feel she has this view can be the way that she sets up her classroom and involves her kids. The room is set up so that the children can see each other and talk. I think that this is important for students at this age because they have a need to learn some communications and social skills. This is important because some students may not reach this. Also, for the reading groups I feel that it is student prospective because she has small groups that allow her to give each student a personal attention.

Kindergarten Here I Come!

The grade that I got assigned to help student teach was kindergarten. The first though that I had when I heard that I would be working with Kindergarten was us playing with dolls, playing duck duck goose, and lots of nap and snack time. Lets just say, I was looking forward to this more then I probably should have been.
However what I found when I went to student teach, was the amount of hard work and effort that the teacher expects from the children. I was impressed. When I get to the classroom, it is reading time. The teacher separates the class into three groups based on the reading level. The way that she does it allows for the children to feel comfortable and to give them more individual attention. From this the children are put on rotations. I got to listen and assist the children read through some books. Overall, this was a great experience and I cannot wait to see what else the children will do.
